Where Filmmakers Should Spend Their Money

I hope you’re having a good weekend. First off, I’m offering the one remaining spot in our upcoming Inner Circle for $2600 (rather than $3979). You will receive two story consultations rather then three. Email me immediately if you are interested because this final, discounted spot will go quickly: Karen@kareneverett.com

I am offering this option because I understand how many filmmakers are caught in the Catch-22 situation of needing money to create trailers and needing a trailer to generate funding.

After two decades in the independent documentary world, I’ve come to believe that the #1 place to spend your money is on cinematography. Why? Because the production quality of the picture and sound is the most important, defining aspect of a cinematic medium.

The #2 place best place to spend money (among a long list of essentials including archival footage, editors and legal fees) is story consulting. Why? Because if you get your story (or essay) structure right, you’ll attract funding today and large audiences tomorrow. If you don’t get the structure right, you’ll likely waste time and money shooting footage you don’t need and spinning wheels in the edit room.

One of my greatest joys in life is helping filmmakers create compelling documentaries. Please email me if you are interested in joining our unique Inner Circle story consulting program which begins this WED, Nov. 5th. Learn more at
