The Myth of Post Production
Applying to Sundance for funding? I’ve got two tips. First though, I’m offering the one remaining spot in our upcoming Inner Circle for $2600 (rather than $3979). You will receive two story consultations rather then three. Email me immediately if you are interested because this final, discounted spot will go quickly:

Tip #1, which is straight off the Sundance Documentary Fund website, is to wait until you have the best submission clip possibly to submit. Their new Rolling Open Call initiative (now open) allows you to submit as late as August, 2015. If you can significantly improve your cut between now and then, do so, then submit.
Tip #2 is the opposite advice in regards to structuring your film. Don’t wait. The biggest mistake I see filmmakers make is to wait until post-production to bring in a story consultant. By then, they have shot 90% of their film in a poorly conceived approach.
It’s sad to see. Many filmmakers don’t understand the basics of story structure, or an essay structure. I‘ve seen several directors who have made the mistake of shooting too widely rather than strategically. They learn the hard way the myth of post-production, which is that you can always “fix it in post.”
One of my greatest joys is helping filmmakers in pre-production or production strategize their approach, including a meta-design (such as the three act structure); a detailed shot list; and specific, requisite interview questions.
If you are considering joining our supportive Inner Circle program, don’t wait for post-production to get the guidance you need to shoot strong narrative footage with which to construct your film.
