Roy W. Dean Grant Deadline is Oct 31st

It’s time to apply to the Roy W. Dean Grant! The deadline is October 31st.

Contrary to popular belief, this grant offers a cash component, as well as a slew of free and discounted services. For example, the winner will receive 50% off New Doc Editing’s Grant Writing Services.

I came in second place for this grant myself, and I have three tips:

  • Stress the urgency of your documentary. (This was the big reason I was not selected for the grant; the winner had exigency on her side.)
  • If you’re making a social issue documentary, highlight what’s being done about the problem. This particular selection committee loves solution-oriented documentaries.
  • Take advantage of the free 15-minute consultation to showcase confidence in yourself. This is the secret psychological sauce in “The Art of Film Funding,” authored by Carole Dean. (The grant is named after her father).

Also note that the Sundance Documentary Fund deadline will be in late Fall 2020.

When I began going to Sundance in 1992, 1 in 2 films had a chance of getting into the festival. Now the odds are less than one percent. Let us help you identify the unique story, angle, or artistic approach that will make your doc rise above the crowd.

Many thanks to director Lonnie Frazier for the testimonial below, which praises our brilliant staff grant writer:

“I contacted Karen when I was struggling to write a better grant application. I learned so much working with her staff grant writer. Her writing is simply beautiful. She took my confused scribbles and created a compelling storyline.”
