Free Flight to Documentary Story Workshop

Directing your own documentary can be a lonely endeavor, which is part of the reason I’m at West Doc today, a documentary conference in LA.  If you’re searching for community, I want to share with you my own solution to creating such a community for myself, as well as invite you to a documentary story workshop in San Francisco at my expense.

When I went to film school and later taught editing at the most prestigious documentary program in the world at UC Berkeley, I enjoyed two decades of a built-in, easily accessible community of intelligent, committed filmmakers, who helped one another with shooting, editing and morale. What a gift!

Now, a year into my retirement from teaching at UC Berkeley, I’ve been intrigued by the problem of how to re-create that intoxicating environment of learning, bubbling creativity and morale support.

To this end…human potential movement leader Jean Houston tells the story of how her mentor Margaret Mead, dispensing advice on her death bed, commissioned Jean with a great task:  create small, local “teaching/learning” communities. The renowned anthropologist insisted such an egalitarian-style education was the wave of the future.

Inspired by this story, I am creating an extraordinary opportunity for six committed filmmakers through my upcoming Inner Circle, which begins September 30th.

I invite you to join me this fall for an all-day story intensive in San Francisco, which is part of the 3-month Inner Circle program. We will review your footage, and collaborate on one another’s projects.

The best part? If you live outside the Bay Area, I’ll pay for your plane ticket (up to $400) when you join our upcoming Inner Circle, which is my answer to Mead’s call for innovative teaching/learning communities. The early-bird discount ends tomorrow, so register today at:

According to former Inner Circle member Greg Boozell:

“Through the New Doc Inner Circle, I was able to develop a structure for my film. Thanks to its collaborative nature, the Inner Circle was a creative haven of mutual support, constructive critique and filmmaking education. Karen Everett is a gifted educator and filmmaker.”
