Farewell Beloved UC Berkeley

As many of you know, I’ve been privileged to teach at the #1-ranked documentary program in the world, at UC Berkeley, for 18 years.  As I write this blog, I am just one day away from taking early retirement from this beloved institution, because my story consulting business, New Doc Editing, has been so successful.

What does this mean to you?  First, I hope you will find some inspiration in my belief that dreams can come true.

Three years ago, I believed that I could help more filmmakers through my business than at the small Graduate School of Journalism, and this has proved true. I feel very blessed to be sharing my talents and helping more filmmakers.

Although I’m giving up the security of bigger pension benefits by retiring early, these so-called “golden handcuffs” can’t compare to the satisfaction and prosperity of serving on a larger scale!

Second, I am excited to recommit to serving filmmakers with the very best documentary structuring guidance on the planet, through my story consulting services and online seminars (see end of this email).

Third, I invite you to ask yourself, what is your dream?  If it’s to make an outstanding documentary film, what’s holding you back, if anything?

If fundraising is a concern, it may be that you are not clear enough about your concept to present it in a compelling way.

If you are concerned about your documentary’s story or essay, imagine how being confident about your film’s structure could save you time, money and worry in both production and post-production.

My leaving UC Berkeley gives me the opportunity as a story consultant to help more filmmakers realize their dreams.  I like what editor Vivien Hillgrove once said about documentary directors—that they are very brave. You are. And I’m here to support your courage.

While I’ll miss working closely with the remarkable faculty and students at this fine institution, particularly beloved program head and PBS producer Jon Else, I am at peace with my decision to move on because I know I’m fulfilling my purpose in life.

Part of that purpose is helping you make your dream come true, by producing the very best documentary film you possibly can.

In honor of all of us who make big decisions in order to fulfill our life calling and dreams, I’m extending my special offer on my online seminars. If you need help with your film’s concept and structure, and you want to save money now, check out:
