Documentary Director’s Vision Worksheet

Have you ever discovered that an editor is cutting a different film than the one you had intended them to edit?

Some of the directors we work with find it invaluable to communicate their vision in a formal statement prior to beginning post-production. We’ve codified this process and call it DOVESTM (Director’s Outcome, Vision & Editorial Statements).

More concise than a treatment, this powerful document outlines the Director’s goals and approach to the film.  Its purpose is to guide and foster harmony within the post-production team, making sure that the director stays in control of the film by clearly communicating their objectives.

Formerly only available to New Doc Editing clients, I’m now making our DOVES worksheet available for free to all directors and editors.

In other news…congratulations to our client/director Jessicca Moore, whose film Why Not Home about home birth premiered last night in San Francisco! Here’s what Jessicca said about finishing up her film with New Doc Editing:

“Nearing the end of my project, I still had some unanswered questions about a few key points in the story. Karen watched my cut and gave me the specific and insightful feedback I needed. Sometimes you get what you pay for. Karen’s consultation was absolutely worth it.”

Email me to schedule a chat about how a story consultation could help your project. We also have a talented editor coming available soon, and I’m happy to discuss your editing needs.
