ITVS Open Call Closes June 11

The Independent Television Service (ITVS) funds more independent documentaries than any other American entity. So if you haven’t yet checked out the application requirements for ITVS, keep reading!

It can take 2 weeks to prepare.

In addition to a 10-15 minute Sample Reel, you’ll need a 3-7 page document that describes your intended documentary.

To help, I’ve recently updated our Fundraising Services page which includes the current fee. We can critique your Sample as well as help you think through the 4-part Program Description, which is excerpted here from the ITVS website:

  1. A story summary/synopsis of the program (this should include a short treatment):
    • Give an overview of your story, introducing the main characters and potential plot points.
    • Describe the anticipated story structure and narrative trajectory, or potential character arcs for your project.

  2. Topic Summary:
    • Describe why this topic is important, timely or relevant.
    • What is the creative team’s connection to the story? What is your creative team’s personal connection to the specific communities your story is about?

  3. Artistic Approach:
    • Describe your creative vision for the finished project – its visual look and feel.
    • Explain your intended use of cinematic language or any particular artistic approach that informs the storytelling.

  4. Description of the audience for the program including:
    • Are there specific communities (for example, defined by geography, ethnicity, class, or generation) who are the target audience for this program?
    • What is your relationship and access to this community?

Email me if you need help applying. I now have room for one more filmmaker before the 6/11 deadline!
