Photography Fundraiser For My BFF Phyllis

My assistant Phyllis Christopher is much more than an assistant. HBO has called her “North America’s leading photographer of lesbian erotica”. Now after decades of documentation, she has a book deal with a prestigious British publisher! To help pay for the high-quality edition of 1500 copies, I’m sharing her beautifully designed Kickstarter campaign and asking for your support.

You’ll enjoy Phyllis’s work if you’re interested in erotic art, LGBTQ culture, politics and of course, photography. Her book “Dark Room” will be the first publication of “an explosive, tender body of photography of lesbian erotic life and political struggle in San Francisco, 1988-2003.”

Phyllis and I were part of that life–first as journalists, then as lovers, then as best friends. She helped me co-produce my first documentary, “Framing Lesbian Fashion” (1992). We lived a block from the intersection of Castro and Market Street, depicted in the first photo you’ll see here. Many of those women atop the phone booth marched with us in the streets and went to our house parties.

Thirty years later, Phyllis has a baby with her partner Kate in England. We’re still close, and I can’t wait to attend her October show at the famed Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. The world is about to discover Phyllis’s exquisite body of work.

For only 18 BP (around $26), you can be one of the first people to admire her photography, support its publication, and receive an early bird copy of “Dark Room: San Francisco Sex and Protest, 1988–2003”.
