Are you making a transformational documentary? Find out by rating your film. Answer yes or no to the following five questions:
First, does your film have an intention to create a more just, sustainable or beautiful world?
Second, when the credits roll, does your documentary leave viewers feeling more optimistic than pessimistic?
Third, is your documentary “participatory”? In other words, have you optimized its ability to have a high impact in the world through crowd-funding and strategic partners who integrate your film with larger social movements?
Fourth, does your documentary shout “excellence”? In terms of production values, storytelling and artistry, does your film have the chops to be impactful through wide distribution?
Fifth, is your film aimed at the LOHAS market? LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) is an enormous and growing market niche of so-called “cultural creatives” interested in topics like health, the environment, personal development, social justice and spirituality.
If you answered “yes” to at least four out of the five questions, chances are you are making a transformational documentary.
“What differentiates these movies,” according to Matthew Gilbert, former editorial director at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, “is their explicit intent to either affirm a positive vision of ourselves or the world or to actually change people.”
Our new virtual seminar Directing the Transformational Documentary begins on September 15th. Today is the last day to save $50 on early-bird registration. Go to:

Read what one of our course graduates had to say about a recent seminar:
“This class was excellent! Absolutely. It exceeded my expectations over and above. Karen seems genuinely interested in our participation and feedback. The film examples made me think, rather than feel like a passive viewer. Anybody struggling with focus and direction on their project will benefit from this class.”
– Barbara Klutines, Director
