Structuring the Topic Driven Documentary
I hope you had a good weekend. Before I share information on how to structure a topic-driven documentary, please note that the early-bird registration for my new seminar “Structuring the Three-Act Documentary” ends in two days. Our last seminar sold out:

Topic-driven documentaries are often structured around ideas, rather than a character on a quest. Most of Michael Moore’s documentaries are good examples; they feature characters but are structured like an essay.
These essay-style films tend to be organized in three “parts”, which I distinguish from the three “acts” of a character-driven film.
There are several three-part templates popular these days, one of which will make the best fit for your documentary. Before editing, and ideally before directing (shooting), you should have a clear sense of which template best suits your film.
The simplest template begins with a thesis statement, such as “Big food companies don’t want you to know how they are making food.” In fact, that’s the central idea in the award-winning documentary “Food, Inc.”
In part two of this particular template, you spend the bulk of your film proving the thesis statement. And in part three, you turn to the implications for the future.
My new 5-week seminar beginning August 19th will reveal in depth how to craft and customize several templates to help you structure a topic-driven film.
This new virtual seminar is called “Structuring the Three-Act Documentary”. We will learn not only how to structure character-driven films in three “acts”, but also how to structure essay-style films in three “parts”.
You can save $100 by registering today. The price increases to $497.97 in two days.
