Story Consulting for Lifetime of Your Documentary
My work at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism is getting interesting right now. All of last year’s documentary students, who graduated from the #1 documentary program in the country (headed by veteran filmmaker Jon Else), are applying to the Tribeca Film Festival, one of the top festivals for documentary and narrative filmmakers. I’m looking forward to seeing many of their projects get accepted! Good luck, graduates!
I’m also delighted to report that Vicki Abeles documentary “Race to Nowhere”, on which I had the honor of story consulting last year, is doing phenomenal in the press and in screenings across the country.
According to the Washington Post, the film is making waves and “playing as a quiet counterpoint to the better-known ‘Waiting for Superman'” by exploring a different problem: our pressure-packed academic system.
Abeles is an inspiring example of a first-time filmmaker who galvanized her resources to create a film challenging the academic stress that her children, now 16, 14 and 11, have faced. She launched an innovative, grass-roots distribution models featuring screenings in hundreds of theaters and schools nationwide. Congratulations, Vicki!
Finally, I’m happy to be offering a new documentary film consulting package to filmmakers who are interested in working with a professional story consultant over the lifetime of their project.
The biggest benefit of the “Lifetime Documentary Story Consulting” package is that you work with a professional who becomes intimately familiar with your vision and your project. I find that recurring consultations give filmmakers the peace of mind of not having to explain their project and get a consultant up to speed. As a result, the structural advice I give at each stage of the filmmaking process grows exponentially more detailed… and true to the director’s vision.
We’ll develop a close and invigorating rapport as your project evolves into a tightly-edited documentary.
The “Lifetime Documentary Story Consulting” package is not cheap, but you’ll actually get a better deal than if you hired me one session at a time!
Valerie Blue Bird Jernigan, director of “Forty Winters”, had this to say about our work together:
“Karen’s insight and guidance helped refine our film into a more compelling character-driven story, which helped us receive a $50,000 grant from the California Council of Humanities! We hope to continue using Karen’s expertise as we see the film through production.”
