Roy G. Dean Fund Ripe For Visionary Filmmakers
One of my heroes in the documentary film community is Carole Dean. You may have heard of her through her grant program, the Roy W. Dean Fund, which offers grants to films that might not otherwise get made. I urge you to apply for her upcoming grant cycles (more info below) because you will not only invite funding your documentary with a hefty grant, but you are guaranteed a valuable free consultation with Carol just for applying.
If you are applying, let me give you a big tip. Carole funds filmmakers who project a passion and sense of certainty that their film will come to completion. Can you envision that the film you have in mind will reach your intended audience? If so, convey that conviction and vision and you are likely to be near the top of the list of potential recipients.
If you’re not quite there yet, I suggest that you get Carole’s e-book, The Art of Manifesting, available at http://www.fromtheheartproductions.com/index.shtml. Carole is gifted at helping filmmakers visualize and make their dreams a reality.
Speaking of which…you may have heard and possibly been turned off by the idea that you can attract what you want (the “law of attraction”). Despite the hype about the film “The Secret”, there is scientific evidence that when we focus on something, we are directing a part of our brain, the amygdala, which is the gatekeeper for the sensory data entering our conscious mind, to be on the lookout for anything that will bring us closer to whatever we’re focused on.
Carole goes into detail about how to apply proven scientific techniques to make successful documentary film, and she shares several case studies. Having spent 20 years in the documentary film community, and having helped hundreds of filmmakers on their projects, I am keenly aware of a “poverty mentality” that pervades our community and which, ironically enough, exists parallel to our deeply felt vision to improve and enlighten the world.
Carole can help you shift your “poverty mentality” into the hard cash you desperately need for your film, beginning with the right mindset to make that happen. She holds seminars and works with filmmakers individually to cultivate a mentality of success and abundance. And best of all, she backs up her mission with generous grants. This is why Carole is my hero.

Note that you can live anywhere in the world to apply for her New York grant (deadline 4/30/10) or the Los Angeles Grant (deadline 6/30/10).
Also, I have recorded a series of “Filmmaker Affirmations” to help filmmakers visualize their outcome. If you are interested in this free audio file, email me at Karen@newdocediting.com.
